Exposé: Characteristic Traits of a Student Leader Part 1 [OPINION]

Student leaders are no longer a luxury in our educational world, but rather a necessity. Any successful ensemble is made up of a strong director and a committed group of responsible and dedicated student leaders.

Students are usually "eager" to assume the leadership roles, but are they "capable" of assuming the responsibilities that accompany the real leadership agenda? Do they truly understand the personal price of leadership? The election process cannot be taken lightly; for the student leaders will often
determine the attitude, the atmosphere, and the level-of-achievement for the entire organization; they are the pace-setters for every member of the ensemble.

So many factors enter into this important choice. Are the candidates competent? Are they emotionally secure? Will they assume a leadership posture both in and out of the political and election environment? Can they handle stress and pressure? Are they willing to make decisions that are not self-serving, but focused on their followers? Do they accept criticism and learn from their mistakes? Are they selfless rather than selfish? Ultimately, will they serve as positive role models for each and every Nigerian student?

These are not easy questions to answer, but they are crucially important inquisitions, for it is unfair to everyone to assign leadership responsibilities to an individual who has not developed the level of maturity needed to assume the added responsibilities associated with productive leadership.

If a student leader does not accomplish the given task, it can (and often does) have a negative impact on all the followers; and the consequences can range from outward hostility to exclusion from the group. In extreme cases, the wounded student leaders will make a decision to never be put in a similar situation where he/she will be subject to such personal pain. They choose to side-step any leadership responsibilities in the future.

Metaphorically, we do not pick a tomato from a garden until it is ripe, for it will be of no value to anyone. It is impossible to place the prematurely picked vegetable back on the mother-plant. Likewise a student leader who is not ready (not ripe) will be incapable of surviving the pressure and stress of leadership if he/she has not grown to the necessary stage of leadership maturity. There is an art to the election process and a good student leader often has the below traits to watch out for:

* SELFLESS Watch for the students who are always taking the time to help those around them. You can quickly identify this important trait, "consideration-for-others," by simply observing their behavior before and after anything.

* PERSISTENT Tenacity is an attribute necessary for attaining excellence at any discipline. Many people will begin a new endeavor with a sense of positive enthusiasm, but We are not measured by what we begin, but what we complete.

* CONSISTENT Most student leaders are at a time in their lives when they are establishing their personal habits and their life-values; they are truly deciding "who they are." Dreams, goals and desires can shift radically from one day to the next. Pinpoint the student who is predictable and demonstrates emotional stability; those who can "stay the course."

* AFFABLE It is often tempting to favor the student leader who is talented, and this is certainly an important aspect of his/her qualifications, however it is VITAL for the student leader to have a healthy rapport with the other members of the organization. Popularity aside, the chosen student leader must be recognized and respected by the majority of the group.

* HONEST Slighting-the-truth is commonplace. The student who avoids the temptation to exaggerate or embellish the truth and is willing to accept the consequences that often accompany honesty is a rare commodity. Everyone will benefit from being in the presence of a person who demonstrates such personal integrity.

* FAITHFUL-LOYAL "United we stand, divided we fall." This well-worn phrase is still classic advice for every leader. The students who are always tried-and-true loyalists are your best nominees for student leadership positions.

EDITORS NOTE: These six personality traits are only a starting point; however they will establish a strong foundation for the election-qualifications of any student leader. So chose wisely and always make sure that the person you are selecting is a person of integrity and has excellent human relations.

*to be continued..

Newlywed hangs herself after her husband stops her from going on FACEBOOK

Newlywed wife, 20, hangs herself after her Indian husband takes away her phone because she was always on Facebook and WhatsApp

A newlywed wife whose husband complained she spent too much time on social media hanged herself after he confiscated her phone.
The woman, identified only as a 20-year-old named Aparna from the Kerala region, became upset following a row with her husband about her constant use of Facebook and WhatsApp.
After he took her phone, she locked herself in her bedroom at their home and did not respond to family member's requests to let them in.
The woman, identified only as a 20-year-old named Aparna, was from India's coastal Kerala region (pictured)

The Times of India reported her husband, a lorry driver who was often away for long periods of time, then kicked down the door to find her hanging.
He was so upset at her death he attempted to end his own life, but was overpowered by relatives, the paper reported.

In July, an Indian couple forbidden to marry because of their different backgrounds attempted apparent suicide pact at India's famed monument to love, the Taj Mahal.
Police said the pair were stable after they were discovered in a pool of blood in the grounds of the Taj Mahal.
Aseem Chaudhary, police deputy superintendent, said: 'This couple, one of whom is a Hindu and the other a Muslim, tried to commit suicide at the Taj.
'The girl cut her throat first followed by the boy.'
Marriage outside caste or religion still attracts strong censure in parts of India and can even lead to so-called honour killings, carried out to protect what is seen as family pride.
The Taj - India's top tourist attraction - was built by Mughal emperor Shah Jahan as a tomb for his beloved wife Mumtaz Mahal, who died giving birth in 1631.
It has attracted a string of world leaders and royalty including former US president Bill Clinton, while Princess Diana was famously photographed alone on a marble seat at the Taj in 1992.

A Discriminatory experience in EMU...

A student of Turkish Language and literature was racially disctimated by an Instructor. An awful awful experience for a new student on a a Monday, the first day of the 2015-2016 Academic session. The Instructor asked each qnd every student to introduce himself, when it got to the turn of a Turkish-Kurd, he was asked; He said my name is E.A....The Instructor condemned the name.he said that that the name of thr Turkish-Kurd was not awful, but was also of resemblance to that of a terrorist.he also made it clear that it will be impossible for him to succeed in his Class. The student further asked, if acquiring education was based on his identity."The Instructor responded saying that, if it was he would not even be in his Class."The provocation of the unpleasant experience made the kurdish student file a report of the racial discrimination to the. RectorateKibris Gunluk newspaper, confirms that the discrimnatory case would be taken to the Disciplinary Commitee, and due action would be taken against the discrimantory act.In the next few days, we will have a response the result of thr Disciplinary actions taken by the Disciplinary Board

Apple iPhone 6S review:

When I showed the iPhone 6S to one of my wife's friends, she got nostalgic. She waxed emotional about its predecessor, the iPhone 6. It changed her life. Bigger screen, better camera, and Apple Pay. Everyone wanted these things. It was as close to a perfect phone as I've ever seen. All it ever really lacked was a better battery (Plus notwithstanding).
I showed her 3D Touch, Apple's newest technology on these iPhones. She pressed on the hypnotically-animated lock screen, a swimming fish. She watched it dance under her finger. And yes, she was impressed. But when I showed her everything else 3D Touch does, she said, "I'm not sure I'd really use this."
This year's follow-up iPhone, the iPhone 6S, doesn't improve on that battery. And its newest features aren't as instantly game-changing, at least not on the surface. That's obvious: it's an S-year iPhone, and Apple always uses these subtle every-other-year S upgrades to tweak design and ramp up processor speeds. It's the phone for people who didn't get the iPhone 6 last year. And for the past few years, S phones have introduced evolutionary changes that seriously evolved the phone; the iPhone 4S added Siri, and the iPhone 5S debuted the Touch ID fingerprint sensor.
THE GOOD Improved speed everywhere (new processor, faster wireless, quicker Touch ID sensor); a sturdier body; better front and rear cameras; a bold new 3D Touch pressure-sensitive display that could end up being a really useful tool in apps down the road, and which already offers new iOS shortcuts.
THE BAD Same battery life as the iPhone 6. The 6S Plus model remains the only way to get optical image stabilization for photos and video, plus better battery life. You'll need to pay extra to vault past the too-small storage of the entry-level 16GB version.
THE BOTTOM LINE The newest iPhones are top-to-bottom better phones with lots of enhancements; iPhone 6 owners don't need the upgrade, but everyone else should seriously consider it.
