Google Paid Apple $1 Billion to Keep Search Bar on iPhone

Google Inc. is paying Apple Inc. a hefty fee to keep its search bar on the iPhone.
Apple received $1 billion from its rival in 2014, according to a transcript of court proceedings from Oracle Corp.’s copyright lawsuit against Google. The search engine giant has an agreement with Apple that gives the iPhone maker a percentage of the revenue Google generates through the Apple device, an attorney for Oracle said at a Jan. 14 hearing in federal court.
Rumors about how much Google pays Apple to be on the iPhone have circulated for years, but the companies have never publicly disclosed it. Kristin Huguet, a spokeswoman for Apple, and Google spokesman Aaron Stein both declined to comment on the information disclosed in court.
The revenue-sharing agreement reveals the lengths Google must go to keep people using its search tool on mobile devices. It also shows how Apple benefits financially from Google’s advertising-based business model that Chief Executive Officer Tim Cook has criticized as an intrusion of privacy.
Oracle has been fighting Google since 2010 over claims that the search engine company used its Java software without paying for it to develop Android. The showdown has returned to U.S. District Judge William Alsup in San Francisco after a pit stop at the U.S. Supreme Court, where Google lost a bid to derail the case. The damages Oracle now seeks may exceed $1 billion since it expanded its claims to cover newer Android versions.

34 Percent

Annette Hurst, the Oracle attorney who disclosed details of the Google-Apple agreement at last week’s court hearing, said a Google witness questioned during pretrial information said that “at one point in time the revenue share was 34 percent.” It wasn’t clear from the transcript whether that percentage is the amount of revenue kept by Google or paid to Apple.
An attorney for Google objected to the information being disclosed and attempted to have the judge strike the mention of 34 percent from the record.
“That percentage just stated, that should be sealed,” lawyer Robert Van Nest said, according to the transcript. “We are talking hypotheticals here. That’s not a publicly known number.”
The magistrate judge presiding over the hearing later refused Google’s request to block the sensitive information in the transcript from public review. Google then asked Alsup to seal and redact the transcript, saying the disclosure could severely affect its ability to negotiate similar agreements with other companies. Apple joined Google’s request in a separate filing.

‘Highly Sensitive’

“The specific financial terms of Google’s agreement with Apple are highly sensitive to both Google and Apple,” Google said in its Jan. 20 filing. “Both Apple and Google have always treated this information as extremely confidential.”
The transcript vanished without a trace from electronic court records at about 3 p.m. Pacific standard time with no indication that the court ruled on Google’s request to seal it.
The case is Oracle America Inc. v. Google Inc., 10-cv-03561, U.S. District Court, Northern District of California (San Francisco).

Make your own unique SNAPCHAT Geo filters

Snapchat geofilters, the location-based graphics that you can place over your photo, are a fun way to spice up your pictures and let your friends known exactly where you're snapping from.
But did you know some of them are made by users? Here's how you can submit your own geofilter design to Snapchat.
In case you're not familiar with Snapchat, here's an example of a geofilter. This filter one pops up when I send Snapchats from the Tech Insider office in Manhattan.

Madison Malone Kircher

Here's how to submit your own geofilter designs to Snapchat.

You'll need to use Adobe Illustrator or Photoshop to create your design. Snapchat has specific templates for each program. Click here to download them.
Your submissions should be saved as web-optimized, transparent PNG files. Make sure each design is 1080 pixels wide and 1920 pixels high. Files should also be under 300KB.
Check out this chart from Snapchat for more details about the specifics of your design.

Click here when you're ready to submit your design. First, you'll have to create a geofence for it. A geofence designates the area where you want the filter to be available. Use Snapchat's map tool to create your fence.

Next, upload your PNG file by clicking the large plus sign in the upper right-hand side of the screen.
upload geofilterSnapchat
Once your image is uploaded, you'll need to provide some basic information, including your name and email address. You'll also have to explain "why is this location meaningful to you."
After you've answered Snapchat's questions, you're ready to hit submit. If your design is accepted, Snapchat will email you to let you know.
Snapchat has strict rules about geofilters, so it's important to do your research if you want your design to be accepted. Filters for specific businesses are not allowed. Neither are designs that block too much of the screen. When designing your filter, Snapchat recommends picking a "location where people are likely to gather and send Snaps."
If you're thinking about submitting your own geofilter, be sure to check out Reddit. There are tons of threads devoted to tips and tricks for designing the perfect filter. You can even post your design ideas to get feedback from other designers.

DON'T TRUST THEM UNLESS YOU SEE THESE PICTURES..

1. Nope, these aren't what you you think. We've got to applaud this selfie takers ingenuity, even if that'a a shameless waste of a perfectly good tank top. Let's hope the resultant selfie was just for laughs and not meant as a legitimate profile pic.
We're inclined to think the former considering the selfie taker seeming perfectly happy with being snapped by a bathroom buddy in their deceiving pose. A nifty little photo trick that's well worth a laugh, just be prepared to stretch a few vests and tees out in the process.
2
Nobody's really sure what's going on here, other than sheer voyeurism. These kind of images are a stalwart of pop-up banners and headline spouting sidebars, but the unwitting models of these snaps aren't always happy to be the click bait for thousands of anonymous internet users.

3. Misleading makeover

In the hunt for a quick cosmetic fix, we've all been duped by airbrushed before and after ads before, but we can't help but notice the model in question might have had a little more help then a touch of foundation in question. While we can't question the result of the makeover, it's a bit of a leap of the imagination that a product designed to blend and blemish comes bolstered with smoky eye shadow, blush and false lashes to boot.

CBN lifts ban on cash deposit of dollars, others....

The Central Bank of Nigeria has lifted a ban stopping commercial banks from accepting cash deposits of foreign exchange from customers.
The CBN governor, Godwin Emefiele, who announced the decision in Abuja on Monday, said the new directive took immediate effect.
Mr. Emefiele said the CBN would henceforth equally discontinue its sales of foreign exchange to Bureau de Change (BDC) operators, accusing them of excessive greed and rent-seeking practices.
The CBN governor explained that the BDC operators would now need to source their foreign exchange from autonomous sources.
He said to ensure that no operator violated the country’s anti-money laundering laws, the CBN would deploy more resources to closely monitor the sources of foreign exchange by the BDCs.
“These measures are not intended to be punitive on anyone or any group,” the CBN governor explained.
“Rather it is meant to ensure that the CBN is better able to carry out its mandate in an effective and efficient manner, to guarantee the preservation of our scarce commonwealth, and that our hard-earned financial system stability remain intact to the benefit of all Nigerians,” he added.
Nigeria has been hit by foreign exchange crisis amid falling oil prices.
Amongst a range of stringent measures to protect the naira and shore up the nation’s forex reserves, the CBN ordered stoppage of cash deposit of foreign currencies and also blocked use of naira debit and credit cards abroad, and transactions requiring payments in foreign currencies.

According To A New Study, Scientists Say Women Need To Stop Wearing Their Bras Immediately.

shutterstock_252594487
To wear a bra or not…that is the question!  Do you wear a bra for esthetic or health reasons?  There is actually a “National No Bra Day” that occurred on October 13th; the point of this nutty sounding day had the serious purpose of promoting breast cancer awareness and raising funds for research.
Speaking of research, a study was done by Jean-Denis Roullion, a French Sports science researcher.  The thinking has been that wearing a bra provides the support necessary to prevent sagging and to promote overall breast health.  He conducted a 15-year longitudinal study on the effects of wearing a bra on 330 women, between the ages of 18 to 35.
He concluded from his findings that wearing a bra actually did not benefit breast support, and conversely found a 7mm lift in the areola of women who went BRALESS.  He interpreted this finding as indicative of bras causing the negative effect of reducing both circulation and breast tone over time, causing sagging in young women.
A doctor who was not part of this research study, hypothesized that not wearing a bra may allow the breast to naturally increase collagen production and elasticity, which could be hampered by bra usage.  In the video below, this study is discussed.  More research on a larger sample of women needs to be done, that controls for breast size, before any final conclusions can be drawn. Let us know what you think after watching the video.
