A HUGE fire continues to burn in the fenced off Turkish occupied areas of Varosha, near Famagusta.

The fire is centred in the district of the Golden Sun Hotel - but the blaze is blanketing a much wider area.

A firefighting helicopter has been dumping water on the fire for several hours (see FG Video) , with reports that fire crews from the British bases are on the way to assist Turkish Cypriot firefighters.

A huge tower of smoke continued to rise into the sky as the evening set in.

Four engines from the Republic are on standby at the Dherinya crossing point, but do not expect to be invited over the Green Line to help extinguish the blaze. The fire crews are watching the fire from the car park of the Dherinya Cultural Centre.

The Mayor of Famagusta Alexis Galanos, said it was strange that such a fire could break out in Varosha, where there is no electricity.

He has called on Turkish Cypriot authorities to accept an offer of help from the Cyprus Fire Service, so the city can be preserved.

It is not yet known what caused the fire. Many locals remain by the Green Line inDherynia, watching events unfold.
