A hacked adultery website – with close links to Cyprus - has left millions of users fearful their marital indiscretions may posted online.

The AshleyMadison website, which promises a reported 37 million users complete "anonymity" as they pursue extramarital affairs, was targeted by a group known only as the ‘Impact Team’.

The hackers have promised to release users’ information unless the website goes offline.

Ashley Madison set up an office in the Strovolos district of Nicosia as a base for its international operations some years ago.

However, it is unclear how many users of the website are from Cyprus.

As well as employees in Cyprus, the dating website owner has about 160 workers, mostly in Toronto but also in Brazil, Japan and elsewhere.

The hackers have so far leaked details of some of the website's 37 million users and are threatening to release more, including the "secret sexual fantasies" of members.

Ashley Madison, owned by Avid Life Media, is a Canadian-based dating website for people already in a relationship.
