Leaders join to condemn attacks on Turkish Cypriots

President Anastasiades and Turkish Cypriot leader Mustafa Akıncı have condemned the incidents that occurred on Monday, during which Turkish Cypriots were targeted, and stand against racism and hatred, they said in a joint statement, after a meeting in the context of talks to solve the Cyprus problem.

“The Greek Cypriot leader, Mr. Nicos Anastasiades, and the Turkish Cypriot leader, Mr. Mustafa Akɪncɪ, condemn in the strongest terms the shameful incidents that occurred on 16 November 2015, during which Turkish Cypriots were targeted. The leaders stand together against racism and hatred, whatever the source”, they say in their joint statement, according to a press release issued by the UN Secretary General`s Good Offices Mission in Cyprus.

They add that “they jointly affirm that such deplorable acts will be thoroughly investigated and will not go unpunished”.

“Mr. Anastasiades stated that any damage incurred during these incidents will be remedied and Mr. Akɪncɪ expressed his satisfaction with this statement”, the press release says.

It adds that “the two leaders will not allow such unacceptable incidents to jeopardise the ongoing negotiations in any way, in particular at the very time they are trying in earnest to find a solution to the Cyprus problem”.
