Hopes rise that Chibok girls are now free as army rescues 200 girls and 93 women....

HOPES are arising that the 219 pupils abducted from Government Girls Secondary School Chibok might have been rescued after the Nigerian Army succeeded in freeing 200 girls and 93 women from Boko Haram this evening.

Abducted from the boarding school in Chibok in Borno State on April 14 last year in the middle of the night, the 219 pupils have been held incommunicado ever since. Over recent weeks, however, the Nigerian Army in conjunction with its counterparts from neighbouring Cameroon, Chad and Niger Republic has stepped up its offensive against the terrorists.

This has resulted in Boko Haram losing control of the 14 local government areas it controlled at the turn of the year and with the losses, the area it controlled shrank significantly. Now confined to its last stronghold in the Sambisa Forest in Borno State, Boko Haram has been under fire over the last week as the Nigerian Army launched a ground offensive.

Earlier today, in a daring and precise operation the army stormed Sambisa Forest and rescued about 300 women and girls. So far, the identity of the rescued females has not been ascertained but hopes are high that among them will be the 219 missing Chibok schoolgirls.

At least three major terrorist's camps were destroyed in the well-coordinated attack that includes the destruction of the notorious Tokumbere camp in the Sambisa Forest. Defence spokesman Major General Chris Olukolade said he could not confirm the identity of the freed victims and their origins and could not state if any of them was from Chibok until after thorough screening and proper investigations.

Major General Olukolade said: “I can only confirm the rescue this afternoon of 200 girls and 93 women in different camps in the forest. We are yet to determine their origin as all the freed persons are now being screened and profiled."

At least 21 people were killed by Boko Haram in Marguba community and surrounding villages near Beneshiekh, the headquarters of Kaga Local Government Area of Borno State as they retreated. According to eyewitnesses, the insurgents also injured many residents after setting ablaze several houses mostly thatched roofs before looting foodstuff and livestock.

Beneshiekh is about 76km from Maiduguri, the Borno State capital and is located on the fringes of Sambisa Forest along the Maiduguri-Damaturu-Kano Road. Fleeing residents have now taken refuge in Beneshiekh town because the terrorists are still in the countryside and bush.

Nigerian Military Sources Say Cannot Confirm If Any Of The 300 Girls Rescued Are From Chibok..

SharaReporters can confirm, based on conversations with sources in the military High Command, that Nigerian troops have rescued up to 300 girls and women from Boko Haram camps in the Sambisa Forest.
One military source told SaharaReporters that all effort is being made to give the girls medical treatment and care before the military investigates their identities.  Military sources cannot yet confirm whether any of the victims are the Chibok Girls.
Earlier today Major General Olukolade stated that the Nigerian military destroyed at least three Boko Haram terrorist camps in a coordinated attack in the Sambisa Forest. Included in these three camps is the destruction of the Tokumbere camp, said to be Boko Haram’s most notorious camp.

EMU Communication and Media Studies Faculty Hosted Famous Internet Journalists

Eastern Mediterranean University Communication and Media Studies Faculty hosted important internet journalists in a talk event entitled “Online Journalism” taking place under the moderatorship of experienced journalist Zeynel Lüle. T24 online newspaper’s Editor in Chief Doğan Akın, Cumhuriyet Daily online version’s Editor in Chief Oğuz Güven and Diken.com.tr online news site’s Editor in Chief and EMU Communication and Media Studies Faculty’s academic staff member Erdal Güven discussed various aspects of internet journalism during the event.
The first speaker in the panel Oğuz Güven stated that there is no such thing as internet journalism since journalism is journalism. Güven stressed the fact that internet journalism creates possibilities for rapid news share as well as an interactive relationship with the reader. Güven  said “Think of a news item about an accident. Internet enables us to share the news and photos through twitter. Almost everyone has a mobile phone and they share the news rapidly.”
Güven added that internet journalism is a non-stop process which requires the journalist to work 24/7. Güven also put forth that there is still some resistance towards internet journalism in newspaper’s script writing units.
After Güven, T24’s Editor in Chief Doğan Akın stated that we are at the end of the digital beginning. Akın added that journalists perceive journalism as a costly job which should be supported by investors. Akın stated that this could be overcome through internet. Putting forth that if there was no internet, there would be no room for competition, Akın  said that ‘for the first time, we believe that independent journalism may be institutitionalised in Turkey’.  Akın added that the most important distinguishing quality of journalism is being interesting but the pursuit for being interesting cannot be fulfilled properly.
Diken.com.tr internet site’s Editor in Chief and Eastern
Mediterranean University Faculty of Communication and Media Studies academic staff member Erdal Güven stated that he is living the second spring in his profession since they have the independence to express themselves freely on the internet. Güven also added that in internet journalism the relationship between speed and quality is reverse as rapidly published news items lack quality.

A REALIST REACTION: ERDOĞAN'S RESPONSE TO NEWLY ELECTED TRNC LEADER OVER CLAIMS ON RELATIONSHIP WITH TURKEY

On 27th of April, President Tayyip Erdoğan the newly elected President of Turkey laid down his response to newly elected Turkish Cypriot, Mustafa Akıncı for the new type of ties he seeks between Turkey and the Turkish Cypriots. he rights puts it, as saying that the relationship between Turkey and the Turkish Cypriots should be one of brother's and not a paternal subordination. His utterance implies that he demands  TRNC to be seen on the International stage as a co-actor  with Ankara; with a fraternal character. he further rejects the subordination of Turkish Republic of North Cyrus as a subordinate of Turkey. In the words of Abdullah Akıncı, stop treating us  like your "child", but on a more mature count. At a state level of analysis, President Tayipp Eroğans's reaction to Akıncı's demands in an indirect manifestation of Ankara's anticipatory intent towards the Turkish Cypriot. this could suggest a realist reaction by a pivotal power, a probable central player towards a weak subordinate.

In response,  Erdogan sends a soft power message, upon his departure for kuwait at Esenboğa Airport. He said, Akıncı should listen and comply to his utterances, as Ankara is the main source of TRNC state Budget.

"We consider Turkish Cyprus (our son) after all the sacrifices (we have made). How can he stop regarding Turkey as the motherland?" Erdoğan said in apparent indignation.

According to the treaty of Guarantee, Turkey is one of 3 guarantor powers of Cyprus of which Turkey is responsible for the Turkish Cypriots.
The Mediterranean Island of Cyprus was seperated in 1974 due to unforeseen circumstances. The Greek-sponsored military coup that attempted to unify the Island with Greece (ENOSIS), triggered an invasion by Turkey to provide Turkish Cypriots a safe heaven. In light of this, the TRNC officially existence was announced in 1983, but it is yet to be given an International recognition.
After 60 years of dedication and commitment by the United Nations to mediate the  resolution of Cyprus problem, a new momentum has been acquired through the seize-less effort of Special Adviser to the UN Secretary General on Cyprus Espen Barthe Eide. Last month he paid a a visit to the Island, aiming to persuade leaders of both communities namely; Turkish and Greek to restart the negotiation re-resume the negotiation process.
Akıncı's outstanding victory is a manifestation of a deep intent retain a firm stand in pushing for long-lasting peace deal between both communities, as quick as possible.

US State Department committed to peace process for Cyprus solution

US State Department Spokesman Jeff Rathke has reiterated his government`s longstanding commitment to the peace process in Cyprus under UN auspices and its willingness "to assist in any way that the parties would find useful.”

Rathke was asked for his reaction to new Turkish Cypriot leader Mustafa Akinci`s `electoral` victory on Sunday in the Turkish occupied areas of Cyprus.

“We congratulate Mustafa Akinci on his election as the leader of the Turkish Cypriot community”, he said.

It is now expected that there will be a resumption of UN sponsored talks, which have been suspended since mid October 2014.

Akinci, 67, has said he would work with fresh urgency to find a peace deal.

Meanwhile, Cyprus President Nicos Anastasiades has reiterated that the government`s will is to enter a dialogue for the reunification of Cyprus based on mutual respect and a common desire for a European state the citizens of which will enjoy the same rights as others.

Mustafa Akıncı

Mustafa Akıncı was born 28 December 1947. At the age of 28, he became the mayor of the Turkish occupied area of Nicosia Turkish Municipality, and has also served as a member of the ‘Assembly of the Republic’, ‘Deputy Prime Minister’ and ‘Minister of Tourism’.

During the 14 years of ‘Mayorship’ of Turkish occupied Nicosia, he collaborated with the then Nicosia Mayor on the implementation of the Nicosia Sewerage Project and the Nicosia Master Plan.

In this context, Nicosia Master Plan received the ‘World Habitat Award’ in 1989 and the ‘Aga Khan Award for Architecture’ in 2007.

Additionally, in 2003 Akıncı and his Greek Cypriot counterpart were awarded the prestigious ‘Europa Nostra Medal of Honour’ in recognition of their consistent and successful efforts for Nicosia and its citizens during particularly difficult times, and for the preservation of the historical and architectural environment of the Walled City.

Usain Bolt says sprinter Tyson Gay should be ‘kicked out of the sport’

Usain Bolt has insisted that fellow sprinter Tyson Gay should be “kicked out of the sport” and labelled the decision to reduce his ban and reinstate the American following his failed drugs tests as “the stupidest decision I’ve ever heard.”
Gay, who is the second fastest man in history behind Bolt after running the 100m in 9.69 seconds in 2009, tested positive for banned anabolic steroids in the summer of 2013 and was banned for one year by the United States Anti-Doping Agency after “co-operating” with the organisation.
He forfeited a silver medal he won with the 4x100m relay team at the London 2012 Olympics and had his results from July 2012 wiped out. Upon returning to the sport in July last year, Gay said he had felt “welcomed with open arms.”
But Bolt told Runner’s World that he was not happy with Gay returning to athletics last summer: “I was really upset about that. He got a year just because he talked to the authorities about how it was done and who helped him. That sends the wrong message: ‘If you do it and get caught, just tell us all you know and we’ll lower your ban.’ It’s the stupidest thing I’ve ever heard. The message should be: ‘If you cheat you’re going to be kicked out of the sport.’ ”
Bolt is expected to line-up alongside Gay at this summer’s World Championships in Beijing, the city where he won four Olympic gold medals back in 2008, but the Jamaican admitted he was not relishing the prospect of racing his American rival.
“I’m not looking forward to competing against Tyson. It really bothers me. I’m not worried about him beating me, I think it’s because I respected him so much over the years. He was a competitor, kept me on my toes and he pushed me to always do my best. Then to find out that he was on drugs — it’s a bit like I think parents must feel when they have a kid who does something bad and lets them down. I feel like he let me down and he let the sport down.
“You have to drive fear into athletes, to make them think about the consequences of their actions,” Bolt contined. “If they’re getting an easy penalty why would they care?”
Last month, Nike dismissed reports that they were about to add Gay to their roster following the sports organisation’s decision to sign another sprinter reinstated from a drugs ban, Justin Gatlin.

700 migrants feared dead in Mediterranean shipwreck

`

A major rescue operation is under way in the Mediterranean after as many as 700 migrants are feared to have drowned just outside Libyan waters, in what could prove to be the worst disaster yet involving migrants being smuggled to Europe.
Italian coastguards have retrieved 28 survivors so far and about 20 bodies, according to the interior ministry, after the boat went down overnight about 60 miles (96km) off the Libyan coast and 120 miles (193km) south of the Italian island of Lampedusa.
The UN’s refugee agency, UNHCR, told the Guardian that up to 700 may remain in the water, according to numbers supplied by a survivor. The accident happened after the migrants saw a merchant ship in the distance and scrambled to attract its attention, over-balancing the fishing boat in which they were travelling.
Barbara Molinario, a spokeswoman for UNHCR in Rome, said: “They wanted to be rescued. They saw another ship. They were trying to make themselves known to it.”
If confirmed, Sunday morning’s accident means that at least 1,500 migrants have died so far in 2015 while on route to Europe – at least 30 times higher than last year’s equivalent figure, which was itself a record. It comes just days after 400 others drowned last week in a similar incident.
The deaths prompted fresh calls for Europe to reinstate full-scale search-and-rescue operations in the Mediterranean. Last October, the EU opted not to replace the Italian-run operation Mare Nostrum, which saved about 100,000 lives last year, amid fears that it was encouraging smugglers and migrants to organise more trips to Europe.
Pope Francis, an outspoken advocate for greater European-wide participation in rescue efforts, reiterated his call for action during mass on Sunday after learning of the latest disaster.
“They are men and women like us – our brothers seeking a better life, starving, persecuted, wounded, exploited, victims of war,” he said from St Peter’s Square.
Save the Children, one of the primary aid agencies working with migrants arriving in Italy, called on EU leaders to hold crisis talks in the next 48 hours and to resume search-and-rescue operations.
“It is time to put humanity before politics and immediately restart the rescue,” the organisation said in a statement. “Europe cannot look the other way while thousands die on our shores.”
Italy’s prime minister, Matteo Renzi, called for an urgent meeting of EU leaders this week.
“How can it be that we daily are witnessing a tragedy?” Renzi asked, before convening his own cabinet for an emergency meeting.
The EU commission for migration, Dimitris Avramopoulos, is due in Italy on Thursday. The EU indicated it would convene ministers to reevaluate its approach towards the crisis on its doorstep
But the huge rise in deaths in 2015, and the largely similar levels of arrivals in Italy, suggest the tactic has not worked. In Tripoli on Saturday, a smuggler told the Guardian he was not aware of Mare Nostrum in the first place, nor knew that it had finished.
“I’ve not heard of that. What is that – from 2009?” said the smuggler, who says his network organises 20 trips a week during the busy summer months. “Many people would go on the boats, even if they didn’t have any rescue operations.”
Migrants interviewed this week in Libya, the main launching pad for those seeking to reach Europe, say the demand will continue despite the deaths. Mohamed Abdallah, a 21-year-old from Darfur who fled war at home to find another war in Libya, said he could not stay in Libya, nor return to Sudan.
“There is a war in my country, there’s no security, no equality, no freedom,” Abdallah said. “But if I stay here, it’s just like my country … I need to go to Europe.”
In Misrata, a major Libyan port, coastguards told the Guardian that the smuggling trips would continue to rise because Libyan officials were woefully under-resourced.
In all of western Libya, the area where the people-smugglers operate, coastguards have just three operational boats. Another is broken, and four more are in Italy for repairs. Libyans say they have been told they will not be returned until after the conclusion of peace talks between the country’s two rival governments.
“There is a substantial increase this year,” said Captain Tawfik al-Skail, deputy head of the Misratan coastguard. “And come summer, with the better weather, if there isn’t immediate assistance and help from the EU, then there will be an overwhelming increase.”
Save the Children has been on the front lines in the migrant crisis, and said it was growing increasingly worried about an expected increase in children making the dangerous journey across the Mediterranean.
On Friday, it reported that nearly two dozen badly burned Eritreans had landed in Lampedusa that morning, the victims of a chemical fire in the Libyan factory where they were held before their departure.
According to witness accounts, five people, including a baby, died in the blast – which occurred after a gas canister exploded – and the rest of the victims were not taken to hospital by the smugglers holding them. Instead, the injured were put on a ship bound for Italy a few days later. The victims were airlifted to hospitals across Sicily on their arrival.
The story was confirmed by UNHCR, which also interviewed survivors.
