Turkish Cypriot leader Mustafa Akinci has said that efforts to re-unite Cyprus are under the sole guidance of the United Nations, adding that the final text of any solution plan would have to be agreed by the "people”.

His comments come after weeks of media speculation the EU would take a greater role in the ongoing talks process.

"The EU is not a part of the negotiation process; it is close to the negotiation process by providing technical and practical support,” Akinci said.

Akinci added that Turkish Cypriots will become part of the EU if a solution was found and stressed the need for the preparation process to be accelerated in order for the Turkish Cypriot community to be ready for this.

He also referred also to the importance of the unification of the electricity and communications systems between the two sides.
