EU attempt to tackle Mediterranean migrant problem

Cyprus, unlike Italy and Malta, has not suffered from waves of migrant boats.

The European Commission is expected to propose that EU member countries should take in refugees under a new EU quota scheme.

The UN estimates that 60,000 people have already tried to cross the Mediterranean this year.

Brussels will announce on Wednesday a proposal to organise legal means for migrants to come to Europe so they do not turn to traffickers.

EU leaders will discuss the proposals at a summit at the end of June.

Cyprus, unlike Italy and Malta, has not suffered from waves of migrant boats. However, last year 350 people - mostly Syrian refugees- were rescued by a cruise ship off Cyprus and eventually moved to a detention facility on the island.

In April, President Anastasiades and Prime Minister of Italy Matteo Renzi spoke following the tragedy in the Mediterranean Sea that resulted in the drowning of hundreds of people.

During their conversation, the two leaders agreed that it is necessary for the EU to assume substantive initiatives to address such phenomena.

Last month the European Union was urged by the UN to take "bold collective action" to help the increasing number of migrants who are making the perilous journey across the Mediterranean Sea to Europe.

"He urges the European Union to continue to take comprehensive and bold collective action to put an end to the humanitarian disaster at sea. The Secretary-General also says that "the safety, protection needs and human rights of migrants and refugees must be at the centre of the response,” UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric said on April 21st.

The United Nations said it was ready to work closely with the European Union, as well as transit and origin countries to alleviate the immediate plight of migrants.

Mr Ban said the international community has a "moral imperative to act swiftly."
